Onslow County Sheriff Retiring November 30th

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says he is retiring November 30th.

The veteran lawman was soundly defeated last Tuesday in the Republican primary by challenger Hans Miller.

Brown made the announcement this morning during a staff meeting of deputies and detention officers. There had been some speculation that Brown might not finish his term after his loss last week.

The primary race heated up several weeks before election after a recorded phone call surfaced in which the sheriff warned his opponent that he could be part of a criminal investigation.

District Attorney Ernie Lee said after reviewing hundred of documents he found no credible evidence that Miller or his campaign were involved with recent bomb threat calls. Lee called the sheriff "unprofessional" in making the call.

Brown has been sheriff for the past 24 years.

Miller faces Democrat Scott Himes in November. Both men attended the meeting, with Brown calling them both equally viable candidates.
