Onslow County Schools Earn Awards For Innovation

Two Onslow County schools have been recognized nationally for doing things a little differently.

Carolina Forest and Meadow View Elementary Schools are among 25 nationwide to receive an exemplar school designation as they're recognized for being "21st Century Learning Models."

We visited Meadow View Elementary, which focuses on cultural arts.

The school incorporates the arts into inquiry based learning, critical thinking and problem solving.

Fifth grader Jenna Turner told us, "I don't like just watching videos. I actually like doing stuff hands on, and it makes it easier to learn because you know what the stuff actually looks like and what it is instead of seeing a picture of it. You get to see how it works and you get to put things together. It's really cool."

Meadow View principal Vickie Brown says, "You won't be able to tell the classrooms apart because you'll see dance and math all in the same class. It's really neat how the arts work together with the common corps standards to prepare students for the 21st century and life beyond that."

Carolina Forest Elementary school was showcased for a global education.

They are exposed to international teachers, focus on regions of the word, and connect with students in other parts of the world regularly.

The awards were given by P21- a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness.
