As our beaches gear up for hot days and cool tourism dollars, one beachfront in the east has a less than appealing sight now on the shoreline.
Sandbags are stacked five or six high in some places along part of the north shore at North Topsail Beach in Onslow County.
Officials say between Hurricane Irene and other strong storms during the winter, these beaches took a beating, mostly in the way of erosion.
The condos in the Topsail reef community were particularly at risk. So the homeowners association there decided to take emergency action by paying to put the sandbags there.
This November the town will be carving a ditch in the inlet for better boating and using that sand up on the shoreline to help compensate for more erosion.
