New Year Rings In New Laws For NC Teen Drivers

The DMV says drivers going for their level 2 license have to complete 60 hours of driving with a supervisor, and they have to log every hour of it. Fewer hours are required for the level three license: 12 hours- half of them at night. Beyond the logging- harsher rules for teens who speed more than 15 over the limit or if they ever hit 80 miles an hour or more. Those speeding charges, reckless driving, or aggressive driving can land 18 and under drivers behind bars.

"You will be arrested. That means we will put handcuffs on you. You'll be transported to the magistrate's office. We've had 16 or 17-year-olds that have more than one ticket, and apparently they're not learning from that experience," said L. Alvarado with the Highway Patrol.

The new laws go into effect January 1st.
