NEW INFO: Marine Charged With Stabbing

A Camp Lejeune Marine faces a serious charge this morning for a stabbing at a local movie theater.

Jacksonville Police say they've arrested 22-year-old Lance Corporal Walter Kirk for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

It happened at the Carmike Theater on Western Boulevard around 11:15 Thursday night. Jacksonville police say a dispute inside the theater lead to the stabbing.

The arrest warrant identifies the victim as Justin Burns and says a 2- 1/2 inch pocket knife was used in the attack. New Hanover Regional Medical Center says Burns is listed in fair condition.

Kirk went before a judge this morning and his bond was set at $100,000 secured. The judge assigned William Morgan as his attorney and set the Marine's next court date for January 19th.

Kirk is with Company I, Headquarters and Support Battalion. He is an administrative specialist.

Dear Dee I am a member of the victim's family and I thank you. I agree that the military had nothing to do with what happened. I have no hard feelings to the USMC, but just the opposite. I am very proud of our men and women who serve our country.

Dear fed Up, you sound like you have a jealousy in you according to you post on Jan 8th at 3:12 am, you must remember Marines are the same people in the civilian world and the recruiter can’t predict how and what that future Marine will do. So give it a break or pick up a weapon and go deploy thousands of miles away and do things you mind could not imagine. And I don’t mean call of duty on X-box either. To the victim I am truly sorry this happened to you and to everyone bashing the Marine Corps, this happens daily in the news and guess what; they are not and was not military. So I guess you don’t have anything to say about them.

To Fed Up: We are not Soldiers. We are Marines. And I don't know you are basing this rediculious comment on, but riding a motorcycle naked actual takes skill if you think about it.
To USMC Dad: Wow.. A thug? You are horrible. Let me guess, you are basing that off because if his race..? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I'm not. You are just as bad as any one else with that ignorant comment. Way to go "formal NCO", you're really setting an awesome example.
And to anyone wondering why he was carrying a knife.. Have you been in this town before? It's not bad, but even at a New Joins Briefe the local police will tell the Marines to keep a weapon in their vehicle here, as long as it is in plain sight of course. I do disagree that he should not have went into the theater with a "weapon" on him though.

Seriously, Marine or not and race have nothing to do with what was done here. The Marine Corp didn't stab the young man, a crazy man did. His race has nothing to do with it either. Get over yourself. This town is not bad at all and carrying a weapon is not a necessity. This act should not have happened. People need to learn to control their temper.

First of all race was not an issue. I am not the one who stood in the theater, raised his hands and said "A white man gets stabbed and the black man gets blamed for it" (words from the thug's mouth as he was being detained). Obviously you have no clue as to what exemplifies a good Marine. The last time I check, Jacksonville PD denies telling Marines that is is okay to carrying weapons (hiden or not) in their vehicles. So I guess the race cards isn't gonna work so will it be the PTSD card next? Excuse me, the Marine Corp I served in for over 20 years prided ourselves in our title and discipline. Lets review the facts: one the accused had not one but two knives on him(one with the victim's blood on it), two the victim was unarmed, three the accused all but admitted that when the white man gets stabbed the black man did it, four lets not forget the words of his neighbor saying he has a temper and wasn't surprised that he did this, five his wife said she felt he could have handled it differently and six this is NOT upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corp! So no race is not, was not, nor ever will be an issue. Semper Fi USMC Dad

Ok lets see, shoplifting, DUI, homocide of a fellow marine (Lauren), which include bar fights, exposing oneself at convience store gas pumps, (osprey pilot) Yeah, that all takes alot of skill. Whatever happend to using your brain to think with? Theres no difference in a marine and a soldier except their IQ.

I do not want to justify any wrong doing by Marines around the world. I would like to say though that not only Marines get themselves into trouble as well as soldiers, sailors, and airmen. It is never a good thing to see these service men and women in the paper for wrong doing. I would like to add though when they do good it is rarely ever mentioned. First we are all people, The title earned gives many an excuse to use that against us. I would say 99% of the men and women on active duty today serve for all the right reasons. you will always have that one percent no matter what. So what I wouls ask of you is to please do not let anger of what goes on around any military base over ride common sense. These men and women serve with honor, courage, and committment. They know that he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, gives meaning to why they serve. So instead of looking at the glass 1/2 empty look at the economics of them being there ie. the area being built up, the jobs, their paychecks and most of them are good citizens not thugs. So please try to view this in a different light. Thank You for understanding. Semper Fi

Oh great. Heres some more of the fine example the marines set. When they are not drunk, killing each other, riding motorcycles naked, shoplifting, or exposing themselves...they're pretty good soldiers.

He shouldve defeated the assailant without a weapon, this marine is probably mentally ill.

I have been following the story....I wonder why anyone would be carrying two knives to a movie theater, why would you take a small child to this kind of movie, and how can anyone justify stabbing someone over an arguement about noise at the movies? What has this world come to???

He wanted the victim to quit talking, even though it was nearly impossible to hear him talking.

Yes knives are legal however he had two oviously to use them. Its not an issue of being a Marine or not. Its being disciplined. Again obviously he is not. As for him being a good Marine or not from his former NCO he is not. I have always been PROUD of the Marine Corps and so have my kids or... The victim. The idiot who commited this crime will be striped of the title. Once discharged he can go back to his roots...being a thug.
