Police have identified the man who drowned last week at North Topsail Beach.

Police say Joseph Lieber of Milford, Ohio died Thursday morning.

Police say it happened around 10:40 a.m., just south of Onslow County Beach Access #4. That's the first public beach access on the New River Inlet Road.

Witnesses told police the 47-year-old man was pulled unresponsive from the water after being found floating face down. They believe the man may have been in the water for about 10 to 20 minutes.

An obituary says Lieber's funeral will be Thursday in Ohio.

The man was taken to Naval Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not yet released his name, pending notification of his family.
