An Onslow County man will have to spend at least the next 16 years in state prison after pleading guilty to sex crimes involving relatives.
Richard Carroll pleaded guilty Thursday in Superior Court to first degree sex offense.
Assistant District Attorney Kaelyn Thompson says the two victims lived with Carroll at the time and that the crimes happened several years ago when both were younger.
She said authorities discovered the crimes when one victim spoke out at elementary school. Thompson says at first Carroll said he might have accidentally touched them inappropriately while playing. He later confessed to the crimes.
His attorney told the judge Carroll was pleading guilty because he didn't want the victims to have to testify in his trial.
The 62-year-old will have to serve between 16 years and 24 years in prison.
