Deputies converged on a pond near Sneads Ferry, searching for a murder weapon Thursday afternoon.

Elmer Hudler, an Onslow County business owner, was found dead Monday in his home in Dixon. A death certificate says the man died from a gunshot wound to the head.

William Parker, 29, of Sneads Ferry is charged with an open count of murder in connection with Hudler's death.

About mid-afternoon Sheriff Ed Brown and investigators began the search of the pond off Turkey Point Road, not far from Parker's home,

Brown would not say what brought them to that pond.

Investigators were using a boat equipped with sonar to help them with their search. Their search ended for the evening just before 6:00 p.m.

Hudler owned HRS Mechanical Contractors, a heating and air conditioning company in Sneads Ferry.

During a first appearance in District Court, Parker said he would hire his own attorney. He is being held without bond and his next court date is May 15th.
