After 22 years of serving the same town, the town manager says their top cop is stepping aside, but not entirely stepping down.
According to Swansboro town manager, Dave Harvell, Police Chief Ed Parrish asked the town council to accept his resignation.
In his resignation letter, Parrish asked the council to allow him take a smaller leadership role in the 11-officer department. Parrish accepted a role as a lieutenant, a job Harvell said he can have as long as he wants to remain on the force.
Harvell said in the letter, Parrish cited personal reasons for requesting the step back from the main leadership role . Parrish's wife, Julie, lost her battle with cancer earlier in the year.
The town manager said Detective Ken Jackson and Sergeant Dwayne Taylor are sharing the role as interim police chief while the town interviews two agency candidates and three external candidates for interim chief.
In the mean time, citizens in Swansboro are asked to give their opinion on what they want in their next chief of police using an online service on surveymonkey.com.
