Lejeune Controlled Burn May Cause Ashes, Smoke

Some Onslow County residents may see ashes and smell smoke because of a controlled burn in a Camp Lejeune training area.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that Camp Lejeune's forestry section has been conducting a controlled burn in a training area since Friday. The base's website says the training area is located east of U.S.17 adjacent to Verona Loop Road between New River Air Station and Stone Bay.

Local fire officials say ashes and smell from the smoke lingered near the surface Sunday because of weather conditions.

The base forestry division schedules more than 20,000 acres of prescribed burning each year from January to August.
