A highway debate continues even after Camp Lejeune says it will not open Highway 172 through the base to civilian traffic.
NC Senator Harry Brown says he understands between security concerns and Camp Lejeune having a new commanding officer this may not be the ideal time for a change, but he says it's a change that still needs to happen. "I just think that there is a way they could do some background checks on some people and maybe on a limited basis, allows some people to use 172."
Back in mid-April the Onslow County Commissioners requested Camp Lejeune open the roadway for civilians- it used to be public access a few years ago. But a post 9/11 security hike meant it was a no-go unless you had base decals. Just last week the base denied the request, citing safety concerns.
Senator Brown says he will be looking for an opportunity to sit down with base officials and local government officials on the state and federal sides for further negotiations.
