Jacksonville paused this morning to remember those who veterans who died defending our country.
The Beirut Memorial Chapter 642 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart conducted its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, which is across from the Beirut Memorial.
Gulf War POW Guy Hunter, a Marine aviator who was shot down in 1991 by the Iraqis, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.
"My wife's brother was shot down and killed in Vietnam," said Hunter. "The sad thing about that was that he was shot down and killed on her birthday in 1968. So she has her personal Memorial Day every day."
Names of those in the military who have been lost since the last Memorial Day were read during the somber service.
