A fire this afternoon heavily damaged one building at a Jacksonville apartment complex, displacing 16 residents.
Fire crews were called around 12:15 p.m. to Azalea Gardens Apartments on Gum Branch Road.
The fire eventually tore through the roof of the building and a second alarm was called in with volunteer fire departments assisting city fire crews.
The fire department says four units were damaged by fire, three others with water damage. The fire started in an upstairs apartment. Investigators have narrowed that down to a closet which contained a water heater and electric panel.
The Red Cross is helping the families impacted. They have opened up a shelter at Living Hope Community Church, 1310 Hargett Street in Jacksonville to provide temporary lodging to those affected.
