Investigators told WITN the home at 531 Comfort Highway, which caught fire overnight, did not have smoke detectors.
According to the state of North Carolina Housing Codes, in the Landlord and Tenant law, article 5, landlord must "provide and install smoke detectors that meet the specifications in the law – and promptly replace or repair the detectors upon notification from the tenant that repair or replacement is needed."
The article continues that the tenant must, "notify the landlord, in writing, of the need for replacement or repair of a smoke detector."
One woman lived in the home. Officials said she made it out safely, while her dog did not.
While the fire is not being labeled suspicious, investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze.
