NEW INFO: Troopers: Holly Ridge Patrol Cars Collide, One Didn't Have Blue Lights On

WITN has new information about and new video of two police cars that collided early Saturday morning in Onslow County with one bursting into flames.

Troopers say one Holly Ridge officer had a car stopped when an unknown driver stopped his vehicle. Passengers yelled insults at the officer then sped off. Troopers say officer Ewan Richards pursued the car. So did officer David Ubson not knowing Richards was also in pursuit. Troopers say one patrol car pulled in front of the other, underestimating speed and the cars collided. Troopers say one reason they may not have seen each other is because one car didn't have blue lights on.

"There was very little traffic out, so therefore officer Richards did not activate his emergency equipment as he was trying to overtake the violator," said Highway patrol trooper R.E. Dudley.

While both officers walked away from the wreck, troopers say they're both responsible. They will continue to be on duty through the investigation as their chief determines if they violated standard procedure.

A Holly Ridge police officer had to be rescued after another officer rear-ended him and his patrol car burst into flames.

According to Holly Ridge Police Chief John Maiorano the accident happened Saturday morning just after 2 a.m.

Maiorano says Officer Ewan Richards was performing a traffic stop on Highway 17 when some young men driving by yelled out profanities to Richards. Richards then took off to chase those young men.

As the car with the young men approached the intersection of Highway 50, Maiorano says another officer in the area, Dave Upson, saw that car fly by so he drove onto the highway to chase it, not knowing that Officer Richards was not far behind. Maiorano says Richards ended up rear-ending Upson's car.

Upson's patrol car immediately burst into flames. Richards was able to get Upson out. Luckily no one was injured in the accident. The car is a total loss.

Officers were not able to locate the young men afterwards.

The Highway Patrol is now investigating. Maiorano says at this time he does not know how fast the young men or the officers were going.

My question is this, If I were being chased by a LEO and crashed into him or caused him to crash, I would be responsible to pay for the crashed car. Thats how the system is set up. That much I do know, now if it is deemed the LEO's fault, as in this case, does he have to pay for it and if not, why the hell not! In the military, if you wreck a Humvee and it's your fault, you will recieve a statment of charges and it will come out of your pay over time in payments. I sure hope the same goes for LEO's!

It does (in answer to your question they will be responsible). Life is not always as corrupt as some people like to believe.

Quit crying Leo 2, we know what kind of cop you are by your statement. Most of the other LEO comments are right on. It's clear that you are "that" cop that was picked on in high school! Do us all a favor and quit now. The tax payers that pay your check dont want you!

I have a hard time believing that they were attempting to overtake a vehicle and not turning their blue lights on. Another thing that bothers me how did he not see another vehicle and a Patrol Vehicle at that, if I am assisting one of my coworkers in overtaking a vehicle I am going to be communicating with that officer on the radio (he/she will know I am there). Last why did the officer leave a vehicle he had stopped and chase someone that had not violated any law...This boils down to the fact that the two officers were driving wreckless and their fun went bad.....Officers like this put a bad rap on us officers that try to do right ......

All this bashing anytime a LEO has a bad day or makes any mistake and yet WITN still hasn't posted the story about an ER doctor from Pitt County Memorial or Vidant (new name)that got a DWI and blew a .14 on the way to work Friday night. WHATS WRONG WITN?, you only like to see the LEO's bashed? Bet you will not post this either...

if you ever forget just how valueable you are to society, look at your paycheck. Then, look at what that Emergency Medicine Physician's paycheck is like compared to yours.

It would sure be better to let the loud mouth insulters go on their way (as they did anyway) than to wreck the Holly Ridge budget and darn near get killed in the process. Those two way radios are in your vehicles for a purpose.

Im sorry guys but if someone is out @ 2am in the morning, screaming profanity at a police officer, obviously been drinking or very intoxicated.. I dont like some cops, especially the ones that uses their blue lights just to turn on a red light or speeding just bc... But i trully think the cop had a best interest in heart.. Im pretty sure he had more harsh things said to him, then the things that they scream out the window, before!!!
