FIRST ON WITN: Former State Trooper Indicted In Beaufort County

A former law enforcement officer has been indicted for getting money for an injury he said he obtained on the job, when authorities say it really happened during a fight with his wife.

Donald Cumbo Jr., age 46, was indicted last week in Beaufort County on a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses. Court documents state Cumbo filed a claim for an injury to his hand back in 1995 when he was a state trooper and received benefits of less than $100,000. The indictment states that at the time of the claim, Cumbo worked for the Highway Patrol in Beaufort County.

The documents report his injury happened at home during an altercation with his wife. The Highway Patrol says Cumbo resigned in March 2005.

The indictment came on January 23. Cumbo was arrested three days later.

After leaving the Highway Patrol, Cumbo worked as a deputy sheriff in Onslow County. Authorities in Onslow County say Cumbo was a school resource officer, working for them from August 2006 until last Thursday, when he resigned.

Cumbo posted a $12,000 dollar bond. His next court date is scheduled for Christmas Day.
