VIDEO: Fisherman Snags Shark Off Topsail Island

On the same day that a shark washed up on the Outer Banks, a video was posted on YouTube of a shark being caught off Topsail Island.

It took the family from Virginia more than 10 minutes to reel in what charter boat captain John Mallette says is a 125-150 pound blacktip shark. He says it was about 5 1/2 feet long.

The boat was about a mile out from North Topsail when the shark was hooked, according to Mallette.

As multiple commenters have mentioned, anglers catch sharks all the time up and down our coast. Mallette says many of the fishing trips he books out of Sneads Ferry each week are for shark fishing.

The substantial fight to land this shark was caught on tape and posted to YouTube.com, so WITN decided to share it with our viewers as shark interest has been heightened in recent days.

Mallette says the sharks he chases are using following shrimping boats, and notes many other marine animals, including dolphins, are following the boats too looking for food. He says visitors to the beach shouldn't be overly concerned about sharks, but notes that "when you're in the ocean, you're in their world."

Well, the new species that`s headed for the N.C. coast is the dreaded Tasmanian Sand Boring Mole Shark. He will peep out of the surf, locate a target and dive under the sand. He then bores a tunnel, pops up and chomps a chunk out of it`s victim up on the beach. Then he skitters back to the water and disappears faster than a ghost crab. Your`re not safe in or out of the water.....

Why are you people so freakin' mean all the time? I mean, do you really have to bash and complain about others all the time? You must be absolutely miserable.

It's really kind of fun! Most comments here are funny, and WITN really brought it on themselves. I mean, since that poor girl was bitten, they run a story about a dying 5 ft shark that washes ashore, and some guys on a charter boat catching a shark...... 1/2 mile out. All in an attempt to make it seem we are all going to be eaten by sharks. How silly! Actually, yours was the first post that appeared to be 'angry'. Are YOU okay?

I think WITN should remove the comment box on all news stories then we wouldn't have to sit here and read all these dumb a%% comments people put on here.

Someone is forcing Knight Rider to read ALL the comments. I guess he's got a gun pointed at his head or "they" have his daughter held for ransom.

Wow, my father in law, Bob, just caught a shark from the beach at Bald Head. It was a 4ft. killer! Funny, no one cared and the beach goers still went in the water. Bob has never been the same again. He's from Wisconsin!

Would you rather read about this or another shooting/killing/robbery/drug bust in Greenville. I'll take the shark stories.

I caught a 7ft bull shark out of the pamlico river, Guess everyone needs to stay out of the river also. Must be a really slow news day.

"No immediate word on what happened to the shark" Are you all serious???? This may be the dumbest closure to a story I have ever read. People catch sharks every day in the ocean. Find something else to write about.

Is it the intent of the news media to destroy the vacation rental business at the coast by running this story? The shark was caught at least a half mile out into the ocean! There are whales out there too. Are you going to run a story about Jonah?
