VIDEO: Fisherman Snags Shark Off Topsail Island

On the same day that a shark washed up on the Outer Banks, a video was posted on YouTube of a shark being caught off Topsail Island.

It took the family from Virginia more than 10 minutes to reel in what charter boat captain John Mallette says is a 125-150 pound blacktip shark. He says it was about 5 1/2 feet long.

The boat was about a mile out from North Topsail when the shark was hooked, according to Mallette.

As multiple commenters have mentioned, anglers catch sharks all the time up and down our coast. Mallette says many of the fishing trips he books out of Sneads Ferry each week are for shark fishing.

The substantial fight to land this shark was caught on tape and posted to YouTube.com, so WITN decided to share it with our viewers as shark interest has been heightened in recent days.

Mallette says the sharks he chases are using following shrimping boats, and notes many other marine animals, including dolphins, are following the boats too looking for food. He says visitors to the beach shouldn't be overly concerned about sharks, but notes that "when you're in the ocean, you're in their world."
