The Department of Defense announced Thursday that the President had tapped the next commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.
General Joseph Dunford, 58-years-old, has been nominated by President Obama.
Gen. Dunford's nick name is Fighting Joe, according to the Marine Corps Times.
He is a Boston native who served as the Assistant Commandant of the Corps for nearly two years.
Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel wrote, "Thanks to his exceptional abilities, and his commitment to the men and women under his command, we have made progress in Afghanistan and remain on track to responsibly bring America's longest war to an end later this year."
Gen. Dunford, if confirmed by the Senate, will succeed General James Amos in that role.
