A major road in Jacksonville was closed after work crews snapped a power pole, causing many to lose power.
Piney Green Road, near Marshall Chapel Road, was closed for most of the afternoon. It is now open again to traffic.
State troopers say ONWASA crews were digging a junction box adjacent to the road, putting pressure on a power pole guy wire. The top of the pole snapped off. The work was being done due to the widening of the highway.
Power on Piney Green Road and surrounding areas was lost as well. That included no power at the Piney Green Shopping Center on Highway 24.
Jones-Onslow Electric says power was also out in parts of Hunters Creek, Rocky Run Road and on Highway 24 to Kellumtown Road.
That electricity has since been restored.
