Onslow County Animal Services said the Thursday attack made for the fourth rabies case documented this year in the county.
Animal Control officers were called to the 500 block of Huffmantown Road in Richlands on Thursday after residents said their dog attacked and killed a sick raccoon. On Tuesday, testing came back from the state lab showing the raccoon tested positive for rabies.
Animal Control said the dog that attacked the rabid raccoon was not vaccinated and has since been surrendered to animal services.
This is the fourth positive case of rabies this year in Onslow County: the first was in a domestic cat, the second and third in a fox.
