Direct D.C. Flights Coming To Eastern Carolina

You'll soon be able to get to the nation's capitol on a direct flight from Eastern Carolina.

US Airways says for the first time its adding daily, nonstop flights from Jacksonville's Albert Ellis Airport to Washington's Reagan National Airport.

The morning flight and evening return begins March 25th, flying on 50-passenger Canadair Regional Jet aircraft from Air Wisconsin. US Airways says adding the flights is part of its focus on core service areas of Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Charlotte.

The morning flight will leave at 6:15 a.m. and the evening return will arrive back at Albert Ellis Airport at 11:22 p.m.

Albert Ellis already has multiple US Airways flights to Charlotte, as well as Delta flights to Atlanta.

    Since this service begins at OAJ & FAY on Mar 25th, I checked fares to DCA (Reagan) for a short business trip starting on Monday, Mar 26th and returning Wednesday, March 28th. Results from Kayak.com: Jacksonville $264 Greenville $265 New Bern $265 Fayetteville $265 Direct flights don't mean theY are any cheaper by bypassing CLT.

        I understand the value of time, especially for business travelers. If you have to drive to alternative airports to get a direct flight, i.e., OAJ, FAY,RDU, etc., you have to consider the value of the time it takes for the commute. If you choose to drive to your ultimate destination in lieu of flying, you have to consider the time it takes to drive plus the lost opportunity for a bit more productivity in the air or at the airport as opposed to limited productivity while driving. People will use different value equations to arrive at the best decision. But really my main point was that direct flights (in this case bypassing CLT) does not yield a cheap fare as most people tend to think.

      I think that is pretty good cost!!!! I fly often and I would jump on a direct flight for that cheap. They dont make 100 fares anymore unless you fly a bargain carrier... besides, time IS money.

    I hope this is affordable. I have wanted to take the family to the national aerospace museum just out side the dulles airport. Stay at a local hotel and then cab it around to the monuments. Could make a great three or four day weekend if it's cheap enough.

    If you look at the 3 Wash D.C. area airpots customers could fly to Reagan,Dulles, BWI), according to FAA, here's how many passengers the following airports generated in calendar year 2010: Fayetteville 11,139 Jacksonville 6,249 New Bern 5,536 Greenville 1,235 Airlines go where they can make the most money.

      Ok I see your point, but you have to also consider these are military towns and these people are probably flying home from wars or to DC for high level meetings - thus the higher number of people flying there. As for people from Greenville flying to DC, I have looked into it b/c if it was affordable and quick I would do it, but with an average cost of over $300 and taking 3-4 hours (with change over in Charlotte) there is no incentive to fly to DC when you can just brave traffic and get there cheaper and quicker. That is why I think the numbers are skewed. If there was a direct and moderately priced alternative, I think the numbers would be different. Also, flying into BWI or Dulles would provide many more options for International destinations than just Charlotte.

    UGH! Why NOT PGV! Is there really that much demand for flying from Jacksonville to DC? With the new terminal at PGV, Greenville would have made so much more sense! *Plus it would have given me and option to avoid the 6 hour holiday drives, sigh...

      I completely agree. The people who use PVG use it frequently, and I for one would love to be able to get somewhere, anywhere, without having to go to Charlotte first or drive to RDU. And EWE2, when you get to DC, you can change planes and go other places. You don't have to stay there.

        By that logic, why not New Bern. It's central to Jacksonville and Greenville and has Cherry Point. I suspect the flights have to do with Camp LeJune.

          I would not mind New Bern either - still a 45 min drive to Greenville but closer than Jacksonville. It seems that US Air added flights out of Jacksonville and Fayeteville...perhaps serving the military? I am not sure for their reasoning...While we are at it, it would be nice to have either United (to Newark) or Delta (to Atlanta) in Greenville so that people in Greenville have more options for more affordable international travel, rather than being restricted by only US Air.

          Because if you use New Bern, you're still stuck with either Raleigh, Charlotte or Atlanta. And while Atlanta has tons of international flights, you have a 50/50 shot of getting on them on time because they always overbook arrivals and keep a semi-permanent delay. This includes coming back home because they have the slowest immigration lines, even for US citizens. Weather is an issue too. In winter, avoid Chicago O'hare, and in summer, stay out of Atlanta. Can't remember how many tornado 'layovers' I've had down there.

      I would say, yes. i fly in and out of OAJ very regularly and the civiliam population traveling is the minority.. most flights are booked with military or military affiliate. and the cost of approx 250 is pretty reasonable considring a flight to ATL is closer to 5-600 via Delta on average when i travel. But it changes like the wind too...
