Onslow County, NC -- A man beaten by store clerks after lawmen say he tried to rob an Onslow County business wearing a Spider-Man mask appeared before a judge this morning.
Sheriff Ed Brown says Dale Foughty was unmasked by clerks at the Friendly Mart, who also pulled the man's ponytail out and hit him with a broom. It all happened shortly after midnight Wednesday.
The 56-year-old Foughty appeared in court this morning, and had noticeable knots on his head. Foughty, who deputies say was armed with a sword, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and injury to personal property.
They also plan to charge the man with covering his face with a mask for purpose of disguising his ID.
The judge kept his bond at $100,000 and set his next court date for November 10th.
Spider-Man met his match when deputies in Onslow County say he tried to rob a store around midnight.
Sheriff Ed Brown tells WITN News that the would-be robber was surprised when the store clerk resisted the holdup with her broom. The sheriff says when Spider-Man brought out a real sword, the woman clerk returned his jousts with the broom. He said her first blow was a poke to Spider-Man's stomach.
Deputies say another woman clerk at the Friendly Mart then joined in and the two overpowered the robber, ripping his mask off and pulling part of his ponytail out. The robber then managed to escape the store to safety, but not for long.
Onslow County deputies arrested the robbery suspect this morning. 56-year-old Dale Foughty is still being processed at the jail. Investigators say Foughty appeared somewhat sore from the clerks defending their store. They also found shaved off hair in the man's living room.
Wilmington police say Foughty is not connected to four Spider-Man robberies recently in that city.
Foughty has been charged with attempted armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and injury to personal property. He's being held on a $100,000 bond.
Foughty's first court appearance was scheduled for Thursday morning.
