DEPUTIES: Woman Holds Up 'Call 911' Sign For Passing Motorists

Deputies say a woman held up a sign asking passing motorists for help while driving down an Eastern Carolina highway.

Onslow County deputies say it happened early Sunday morning on Highway 111.

A motorist saw the woman with the sign and called 911 while following the vehicle into Duplin County.

Tregan Hankins of Wallace is facing several charges, including assault on a female, felonious restraint and motor vehicle theft. Duplin County deputies manage to stop the car in their county.

Deputies learned that the woman had been in a domestic dispute at her home, and they say Hankins took her car keys. The woman jumped in the vehicle just before Hankins left the home, according to deputies.

After the victim held up the sign for passing motorists, deputies say the 19-year-old Hankins stopped the car and assaulted the woman, destroying her cell phone in the process.

Deputies say the woman received only minor injuries in the assault.
