Cabbie Charged After Fatal Crash

A taxi driver has been charged after a passenger in his vehicle was killed Thursday afternoon.

Jacksonville police say Rachel Pate was in the rear seat of the Yellow Cab when it hit another vehicle. The 49-year-old woman was thrown from the vehicle after police say the cab turned in front of another vehicle on Western Boulevard Extension. The crash closed the northbound lanes of the busy highway for about 90 minutes.

The cab driver, Elwood McCoy, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and and unsafe movement violation. He was released under a $10,000 bond.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated and released from Camp Lejeune's Naval Hospital.

For all of u who think u know what's going on u don't.... I hope once in ur life u get to walk in this mans shoes. I understand that this situation has caused alot if hostility towards him and that's fine. You can hate him. That's ur choice.. But like I've says u have no idea how this has effected him... And um sure if u ask around some more u will realize I'm not hard to find if u need to talk... U don't care what y'all think of him. He's a good guy. With a big heart and he shall be judged accordingly but not by any of u because none of ur opinions matter. I'm not blinded. I can see how hurt ppl can be by this but I also see that he is hurt. He said about how sweet she was and how she talked to him... And if any of u r related to her, and since I hear she was a very sweet lady, why don't u stop to think what she would say to what y'all r running off about. This was an accident. He hadn't set off that day to ruin lives. I know one of u is gonna shrug this off cuz that's the kinda person u r. But u too well also be judged. Say what u will. Kindergarten is over. And this is why the world is what it is cuz ppl wanna play games and point fingers at things that someone didn't mean to do. I'm sure you wouldn't wasn't someone doing something like this to u had u been in his situation... Btw just wanna point out... Her side got hit... If she was wearing a seat belt.... It woulda been a lot worse...... Hope you all never have to endure such a pain he's going thru...she's all he thinks and talks about...

Well newsreader you must not have got all the info u needed. I know that he was responsible for that womans life but you can't make anyone do something they don't want to. I think of the family and pray for them but he also has a family and you also has to think what this is doing to them and how they are hurting. You always have to look at both sides of the story and not just one. Read a little deeper plz before u talk.

First off I'd like to wish my best for the family of the person killed because of negligence of this man. I have a history in the taxi business and you are supposed to insure all persons including yourself are buckled up period and you are not suppose to move until then. Secondly from what I have read and the info available to me from those in the know that he hit the other person because he was not watching the lights. This is not the first time this man has been in the news. I have seen his name in the paper and the details given by a previous comment was not accurate this is a place for facts if you do not know them don’t post lies its public record and in the news. Don’t belittle this women’s death and if you are a friend of him posting lies, shame on you. People should take responsibility for their actions. I asked around and found out he was a "duck" this means the man had base restrictions not allowing him to work there and for good reason. He attacked two marines not four and with a knife. Self defense is not you punch me I stab you that’s assault whether he’s convicted or not. Because of this there’s a pattern of bad behavior and incompetence. Unfortunately the town itself and yellow cab deems him fit to drive which is just an outrage. I pray that this women and family gets justice and once again my best wishes go out to them.

He is responsible for her while she is in his cab. He should of made sure her seat belt was on and also paid attention on what he was doing. Friends or not, he took a womens life away and now he must face the court and god with his actions. Becky seems to be blind of his actions.

Yes I'm one of his friends. Which does not matter. There is no negative behavior or anything else. it was an accident. nothing more. You have no idea what's going on so you should really mind your business.

Obviously some of this guys friend are on here backing him up. My point is that there is a negative history here that if it hadn't been overlooked this guy might not have contributed to killing a woman whos life was in his hands by his wreckless driving. He should have his permits taken.

i hate when ppl comment on these things and dont know what they are talking about. he never lost his city permits. he wasnt allowed on base smart one... this was an ACCIDENT. you have no idea what hes been having to deal with. thats all he was could ask about if she was ok not worried if his neck was broke or whatever. idk if you can possibly look at how youd feel if this kinda accident happened to you but i can tell you seeing him blaming himself for what happened hurts more, after FYI the marine case was DISMISSED!!!! he has a bigger heart than most ppl i ever met in my life!

You may not want to hear this but he took someones life accident or not. He shouldn't have been driving the way he was and also should have told her to put on her seat belt. He has to pay the price and do time. That is someones mother and grandmother. God Bless

First of all this cab driver was jumped by four marines. So if your gonna point fingers you might want to know the full story. Of course you would think tar heel is better those people always up in someone business. Those charges onn him where dismissed. He feels horrible for what happen it was an accident just that and if you don't know the details don't run your mouth. He is a good man that has just had a run of bad luck it doesn't make him a bad person.
