If you frequent Camp Lejeune's main gate, you've likely noticed significant construction going on. Tuesday WITN got a sneak peek at the brand new visitors' center and main gate on base with the official ribbon cutting aboard Camp Lejeune.

The new 1,900 square feet facility is much more spacious and useful than the former building. That center is now part of a $5.5 million front gate refurbishment.

Lieutenant Rob Stanford says the upgrade will help visitors get through base security faster.

"This is a significant improvement from what we've got right now. The current facility, we've got 4 stations- and it's less than 1,000 square feet. It's going to be a lot faster moving through the process," said Lt. Stanford.

The base commander says this will not help with traffic flow. That will come when the new gate at Bell Fork Road is installed.
