About 1,000 Marines are bringing up the rear as the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit returns home to North Carolina after more than 10 months away on duty in northern Africa and Europe.
Capt. Binford Strickland says the Marines returning to Camp Lejeune on Sunday will complete the return of the unit's 2,300 members.
The 22nd MEU has been deployed since March, one of its longest deployments on record. Most units deploy for six to seven months. The unit supported operations off Libya, trained in Dijibouti, and also worked with Spanish and Romanian Marines.
