Lejeune Marines Deploy Today

More North Carolina-based Marines are headed to Afghanistan as U.S. and Afghan forces clear suspected insurgent neighborhoods in a NATO offensive to reclaim a southern town.

Elements of the 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, will deploy on Thursday. It is a scheduled deployment.

The Marines were part of the first wave sent to Afghanistan in President Barack Obama's planned increase of 30,000 troops. Since arriving, the Marine and Afghan units launched an offensive in Marjah to retake the town.

RCT 2 deployed for 12 months. They are supposed to come home in Feb. 2011 but it is possible they will be home in December or Janauary.

Jones: 2nd Marines should not return until Feb 2011. They are deploying as Regimental Combat Team 2 (RCT-2), and as a Headquarters element, will deploy for a 12-13 months. I know b/c I deployed with RCT-5 for 13 months to Iraq, where we relieved RCT-2. Ace: You are right in that Afghanistan is known to be "the graveyard of empires" for other more powerful countries trying to flex military muscle to obtain control. We have our work cut out for us. I disagree that it is a waste though. Afghanistan is a matter of national security that we cannot ignore. The mistake we made was allocating all of our manpower and resources in Iraq, which led us to losing ground in Afghanistan. Semper Fidelis

The famous saying "Winning their hearts and minds" is a waste. It will not work. History is going to repeat its self. Here are some examples of one country trying to take over another by winning their hearts and minds. War of Independance, Vietnam, Iran and the list goes on. The people who own the country will fight to the death to keep it.
