Man Charged With Shooting Friend

More than three months after a friend was shot, an Onslow County man has been charged with the assault.

Deputies say Chad Mayes of Hubert has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Back in November Mayes had some friends over and deputies say he fired an AR-15 style rifle as a joke, thinking there was a blank round in the weapon. A close personal friend was struck in the abdomen.

The 21-year-old Mayes is in jail on a $25,000 secured bond.

I would be willing to bet money on the fact that they were probably drunk and thought it was some showing off going on. I agree with Wolfgang and J, but I'll say what a moron.

If you're not smart enough to use a gun properly, you shouldn't own one. I don't own a gun because I know better.

Every "accident" involving a firearm always includes a violation of at least one [usually more] of the four basic rules of gun safety. 1. Treat every gun as though it were loaded. 2. Keep your finger off the trigger unless you're on target and ready to shoot. 3. Never let the muzzle point at anything you're not willing to see destroyed. 4. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Every responsible gun owner owes it to himself, his family, his friends and the public to follow these rules at all times. Doing so would eliminate incidents such as this one.

The Darwin Awards are usually given out posthumously to the moron who caused his/her own demise. Unfortunately this individual almost caused the demise of his friend. He deserves the "How Stupid Can You Be Award"

Why did not Chad Mayes clear the AR 15 when he picked it up? I fired many blank rounds in the Army. Even a blank round fired at close range can do bodily harm. In WW2 blank 30-06 rounds were used to launch rifle grenades , effective range about 100 yards. I question his motive or I agree with "J" idiot. If you are ever pick up or handed a firearm clear it first to make sure it is not loaded with a bullet in it.
