The Onslow County Sheriff's Office has named the man who said he found his roommate dead a person of interest in the homicide.
A press release Monday night said 60-year-old James Powers is the person of interest in the death of John Smallwood.
Onslow County deputies say the 55-year-old was found dead at his Hubert home on Smallwood Road around 2 p.m. Sunday. The Medical Examiner's Office has ruled his death as a homicide.
In an autopsy performed Monday at Onslow Memorial Hospital, the medical examiner says the man died from gunshot wounds to the head.
The Department of Correction web site says Smallwood has several past drug convictions. The latest was in 2007 where he was given probation. In 1974 the man spent 3-1/2 years in prison on another drug conviction.
