An Onslow County sheriff deputy was called to a home hours before they say a son killed his own mother with a shotgun.
Justin Smith was arrested Thursday afternoon for the murder of Cheryl Burgess.
Sheriff's office records show a deputy was sent to the woman's home on Queens Road late Wednesday night to handle a disagreement between Smith and his mother. The deputy resolved the call by taking Smith to another location out of the area.
Deputies say they have determined that Smith was later given a shotgun by a friend and came back and shot his mother.
Deputies recovered that shotgun after getting a search warrant for 203 Snapper Court in Hubert. It was found underneath a bed at the home.
Meanwhile WITN News has learned an autopsy shows Burgess was shot in the head.
Neighbors say they heard screams Thursday morning at her Queens Road home. Minutes later they saw deputies at the scene.
The 23-year-old Smith was arrested some four hours later.
A man accused of murdering his mother is due in court Friday morning.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says 23-year-old Justin Smith was captured around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
The murder happened at 108 Queens Road in Hubert Thursday morning. Public records list the person at that address as Cheryl Burgess.
Neighbors say they heard screams, and then the deputies showed up.
Around midday deputies announced there were looking for Smith as a person of interest in the homicide.
Department of Correction records show that Smith was last released from prison on June 30 for probation revocation.
Smith previously was convicted for assault against a government official, multiple counts of larceny, and misdemeanor breaking an entering.
He is being held under no bond.
