Marine Guilty Of Manslaughter In Baby's Death

An Onslow County jury deliberated all day to find a Cherry Point Marine guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The victim was the man's infant son.

Hassan Saeidifar was standing trial for murder, but just before 5:00 p.m. jurors came back with the lesser guilty verdict of manslaughter. They also found him not guilty on a child abuse charge.

The three month old baby died at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in 2007 after being taken off life support.

Police said they believed the baby died from Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Saeidifar received a 16 to 20 month sentence.

How can someone be guilty of manslaughter, but not be guilty of child abuse. Seems to me that if the child died, then that is the most severe form of abuse you could commit.
