Murder Suspect Held Without Bond

A district court judge says a Marine cook will be held without bond on charges he killed two people Friday.

In a surprise move, the judge kept the hearing for Corporal Jarrell Wilson out of the public view Monday morning. At the last minute the hearing was moved to another courtroom, without telling the family of the victims or the news media. The judge cited security reasons as the reason behind the change.

Wilson is accused of killing 24-year-old Gabriel Ape and 23-year-old Christopher Watts behind the Northwoods Shopping Center.

Claire Ann Thomas is the mother of Watts. Fighting back tears, she said her son was a great father and a family man. " My son will never see his girls grow up or start school this year. It has been so rough. We lost a major part of our life, major part."

A military cook has been charged with two counts of murder after a shooting in Jacksonville.

Corporal Jarrell Wilson, 22 of Camp Lejeune is facing two open counts of murder. Court records show that Wilson was arrested June 16th for possession of marijuana, possession of a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say around 2:00 a.m. an officer on patrol heard shots in the vicinity of the Northwoods Shopping Center on Onslow Drive.

Officers found 2 victims with apparent gun shot wounds behind the shopping center. They have been identified as 24-year-old Gabriel Ape and 23-year-old Christopher Watts. The two victims are civilians. Friends of Ape tell WITN that he is the father of two young children.

Authorities say Wilson's car was stopped at Camp Lejeune's main gate after police alerted the base about a possible suspect car in the shooting.

Camp Lejeune said in an earlier news release that two Marines were being questioned, but Jacksonville police say they do not plan to charge that second Marine.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, a 24-year-old Gabriel Ape is listed with criminal convictions for several charges, including felony breaking and entering and assault on a public official dating back to 2001 in Onslow County. The 24-year-old Ape listed on the DOC website was released from prison in 2008.

A 23-year-old Christopher Watts is listed on the DOC website with convictions in Onslow County on several charges, including assault on a female and larceny.

No past convictions were found for a 22-year-old Jarrell Wilson.

Camp Lejeune says Wilson, of Wayne, Michigan, is assigned to the 10th Marine Regiment. He entered the Marine Corps on October. 23, 2005 and was trained as a military cook.

The base says Wilson deployed twice to Iraq with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment; once from January to July 2007 and again from April to November 2008.

boots on the, is how freedom is maintained jarrell walked in them boots, not 1 time but 2 times I would think that we all share some blame in how our young men reach out for help thats not there.no 1 should die over A phone,or $60 and only A fool will ask A shooter to shoot.we as mothers and fathers let our son,s grow up on violents and mayham, when we should be raising them to know what this will bring in the end pain for all that love them.I think that hype played A big roll here A roll that three young men found hard not to hear. WHO,S BAD.this we still don,t know, but we do know who,s sad the kids, the mothers and fathers[were ever they may be]families and friends.last but not least,[ Ft bragg ]why flee, fear of the unknown and law is law and it dose matter, how and why. ever had A gun taken from and used on you? not A good feeling if you live. all and all three young men, not 1 willing to think about the big pitcher, living life as long as you can, and free

I definately need to get this off my chest. you people know nothing. All gabe wanted was for rell to give him the money for a phone that rell broke earlier that week. It belonged to Gabes baby momma. Now, I promise you, Gabe & Tip were not trying to fight Rel, they just wanted the money. Rel was communicating threats toward Gabe before this even happen. But he never chased after Rel.. not once, he never said anything about it. Tip & Gabe were CHANGING. Both of them had kids at home, and loving families. I dont care if that had a bad background, or if Rel was a Marine. We got people going to jail for killing DOGS, so whats makes him soo innocent? He MURDERED two fathers. Their kids cant wake up on a christmas morning and run the hug their fathers, Gabe and Tip wont be there for their Graduation.. Birthdays, Weddings. These men, were GREAT GUYS. And law is law, if a man murders another... it doesnt matter who he is, he should get the Max serving time or the death penalty. Period.

To all of you who keep saying that Mr. Jarrell is innocent because he was defending himself, please think about one thing: if you kill in self defense you rarely feel the need to hide from the police. I absolutely love the Marine Corps and all they do, but this little fool was in trouble only weeks before for an illegal gun possession charge. Just because he was never convicted does not make him a saint. The innocent dont try to run away before the cops get there. Just something simple to think about.

LET ALONE BE AT HOME WORRYING IF YOUR GONNA GET A CALL SAYING YOUR HUSBAND IS DEAD. STOP BASHING THE MARINES BECAUSE OF JARRELL. HELL WE DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT HAPPENED JARRELL COULD HAVE DID THIS OUT OF SELF DEFENSE I MEAN THEY WERE CRIMINALS AND JARRELL HAD NOTHING ON HIS RECORD SO LOOK AT THE PICTURE!!!!! IM NOT ABOUT TO LET ANYONE BASH THE MARINES AND THEY FIGHT EVERYDAY FOR OUR SAFETY AND LOOK HOW YA'LL DISRESPECT THEM. TO THE MARINE WIFES WE NEED TO STICK TOGETHER AND SUPPOURT OUR TROOPS.

I feel like it was very stupid what jarrell did andhe shouldnt have done it. but c'mon now, 2 guys against one. Jarrell just let his pride get to ahead of him and now he really needs to face the charges. I feel bad for all of the families, they all lost a son. Jarrell was a Marine so of course he knew how to defend himself, my husband is a marine i know. He did not have to pull that trigger and kill them men. Im pretty sure he didnt want too. But like i said no one know what happened but the other marine. Hopefully he speaks the truth

I say we just hire Vic Mackey or the A-Team to come in and clean up the streets of Eastern NC since we have too many Police Chiefs still hung up on the idea of community policing just so they can get more grant money. To our local officers...don't let the administration get you down! To the local Chiefs...it's time to take your cops off the leash and let them start playing hardball again.

The numbers are too many, too many people died that night. Not just the two physical deaths, but also the death of Mr. Wilson he will never ever be the same as he was before he pulled the triger. Mother's died, Father's died, siblings died, children died, grandparents, cousins, friends, lovers..etc..The ripple affect is overwhelming and will continue for years to come. We all die a little when we degrade, belittle, point fingers, spew hatred. That's what is wrong with the world, compassion has gone by the wayside. Look at the bigger picture..2 men are forever gone. And 1 man will have to deal with his own personal hell as long as he lives. We have the right to voice our opinion, two words come to my mind, compassion and humility for all parties involved. For in the long run, we become better members of society and that's where real change can start. It's easy pointing fingers, but difficult to walk a mile in another man's shoes. My heart goes out to all family memebers in this tragedy.

I know this guy named Gideon, he is my daughter's best friend. He is an awesome guy, he works with troubled youth. He is also Gabe's brother. The Ape family has been through so much in the past 4 years more than I'm sure most of the posters have been through, yet they remain strong. We are all instant away from doing something we regret, some act on it and others don't. I am no one to judge, I leave that to God. Funny thing is most of you don't even realise you are murderers too, these guys have families who come on and read your hateful posts and each time they do they die a little inside, and to think you chose your weapon just like Jarrell did. Only you get to hide like cowards behind a computer screen..Think before you speak. We love and support the Ape and Watts family.Godspeed..
