A Camp Lejeune Marine is ejected from his car during an accident and later dies.
It happened Sunday just before 3 a.m. in Jacksonville.
Police say Daniel Gilbert of Camp Lejeune was driving his 1997 Mercedes when he lost control and ran off the roadway. Police say Gilbert was ejected from his car. The Mercedes rolled over several times before coming to a stop.
Gilbert later died at the hospital.
His passenger Daniel Ritchie also of Camp Lejeune only suffered minor injuries.

At approximately 0250 hrs on 5-17-09, officers of the Jacksonville Police Department, NC DOT, Jacksonville Fire Department, Jacksonville Volunteer Rescue Squad, and Onslow County Emergency Medical Services responded to a single vehicle crash which occurred on the bypass at the split with US 17 Southbound and NC 24 Westbound. A preliminary investigation reports the vehicle was traveling NC 24 West/US 17 South and attempted to change lanes from NC 24 Westbound to travel US 17 Southbound. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 19 year old Daniel Gilbert of 2nd MLG CLB 6 Supply Bn, Camp Lejeune, NC was operating a 1997 Mercedes sedan and lost control causing the vehicle to run off the roadway to the left and travel up the embankment of the overpass of NC 24 Eastbound. Mr. Gilbert was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest on top of the overpass in the lanes of NC 24 Eastbound. The vehicle continued traveling and came to rest at the bottom of the embankment. Mr. Gilbert was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. The passenger, identified as Daniel Ritchie of 2nd MLG CLB 6 Supply Bn, Camp Lejeune, NC was treated for minor injuries. The roadway was closed for approximately three hours. This crash is still under investigation.
