Tornado Damage Still Apparent One Year Later

A year ago Sunday, a devastating tornado ripped through the small community in Belgrade in Onslow County, tearing apart homes, and changing lives.

An EF 2 tornado struck the community on Mothers Day, damaging several homes and injuring 6 people. Monday homes and windows remain boarded up, some trees are still uprooted.

The Belgrade Express Mart was destroyed that Sunday in 2008. All that stands now is an outer shell of concrete blocks. It took a year for the store to be back up and running again in a new location, as they had no insurance.

Other families we talked to say they received insurance money and money from FEMA to help repair the damage to their property. According to county officials, damage from the tornado was estimated to be just over 327 thousand dollars
