About 100 Marines and Sailors left Camp Lejeune Thursday as one of the first waves of Marines to head to Afghanistan following President Obama's announcement of a troop surge in that country.
Of the 10,000 troops headed to Afghanistan 4,000 will come from Camp Lejeune. Their mission will be to conduct counter insurgency operations and work with the Afghan National Security forces.
Thursday was was an afternoon of tears, long embraces, and dreaded goodbyes, as families sent their heroes off. It will be more than nine months before these families are reunited again.
