UPDATE: The boil water advisory for Swansboro and Hubert residents has been lifted.
Thousands of Onslow County residents are being told they should boil their water because of vandalism at a water tank in Hubert.
ONWASA says the advisory impacts 2,000-3,000 residents who live in Hubert and Swansboro.
The utility says vandals recently spray painted the outside of the elevated tank, but because of the proximity of the vandals to the drink supply they issued the advisory on Saturday.
ONWASA says there’s no indication of contamination, that the advisory is being issued strictly as a precaution.
During a boil water advisory, ONWASA advises customers to boil all water used for human consumption (including cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, and washing hands) for one (1) minute or use bottled water.
Tests on the water will take at least 24 hours to determine if the water is safe to drink.
