A New River Air Station Marine says a burglar Friday morning left a half-eaten apple on his kitchen table and a big mess in his Onslow County duplex.
Deputies searched for the burglar until mid-afternoon Friday. Captain Rick Sutherland says a suspect was caught using information developed by one of their bloodhounds and from neighbors.
That suspect is being interviewed by detectives and more information should be released on an arrest later tonight.
It all began when Marine Sgt. Brandon Eliason came home and noticed a light on in his duplex. At first he thought maintenance was there, but then noticed a back window broken out.
Without his cell phone, the Marine went next door to alert authorities.
While waiting on deputies to arrive, Eliason tells WITN News that he saw the man come of the back of his apartment.
He chased the burglar into some nearby woods. Eliason says by that time deputies arrived and joined in the chase and subsequent search.
Eliason says his apartment was ransacked, and says he found what he believes was the burglar's loot bag behind the duplex.
The area was closed off as deputies set up a perimeter in the area with additional deputies. Two tracking dogs were also brought in to help find the suspect.
