Onslow County Deputy Fatally Shoots Man

A man is dead, shot by an Onslow County deputy responding to a call at a home off Jeffrey Road Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Ed Brown identified the victim as John Traub.

The Sheriff's Office reports the responding deputies were confronted by Traub, who had a firearm. A news release says deputies were forced to open fire.

Neighbors say Traub was in his mid-40s. They also tell WITN News that he was inside the home, waving a gun. Neighbors say they only heard one shot.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

Sheriff Brown has called on the State Bureau of Investigation to investigate.

The deputy or deputies involved will now be interviewed by the SBI. The Sheriff's Office will then determine if there will be any kind of administrative leave. Officials counseling is made available to law enforcement involved in shooting incidents.

The Sheriff's Office press release said: "Additional information will be withheld so that the incident can be thoroughly investigated."

The last time an Onslow County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot someone was in the early 90s.

John was a great guy, if only you knew him, I worked with him almost everyday for months. He was a very hard worker and helped everyone, everyday, in whatever needed to be done. He will be deeply missed and thought of. And to those have said discouraging things... I pray that you or any of your family members will never have to suffer the loss that so many of us had to endour because of this tragedy, that has happened to this dear friend and coworker to so many. Rest with the angels, John.
