Jacksonville Man Shoots Himself & Lies To Police About It

A man in Jacksonville who claimed to have been robbed and shot while at an ATM is charged with lying to police.

Authorities say Rick Mitchell Jr. of Midway Park told police the suspect took off on foot after the attack at a Cash Points ATM on Piney Green Road. After talking to an investigator a second time, Mitchell recanted his statement and said he had actually shot himself accidentally due to a weapon malfunction.

Mitchell turned himself in to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. He has been released on $1,000 unsecured bond.
