North Carolina lost 388 lives to drunk driving in 2010. That's up by six-point-eight percent. For that reason, Jacksonville Police say have a plan for your New Year's celebration.

"If you have friends that are not going out-- maybe contact one saying: hey, I'm going out this evening, could you be my back up plan if I find myself too impaired to drive or to get home? Could I call you to come get me wherever I'm at?" said Major Patrick Traitor with Jacksonville Police.

JPD says expect to see more officers out than usual watching for drunk drivers.

Police say for a safe New Year's celebration, plan ahead. Designate a non-drinking driver who can get everyone home safely, and be vigilant. If your designated driver starts drinking, come up with another plan for getting home. Call a friend, family member or a cab, and take the car keys away from friends and relatives who have had too much to drink. If your hosting a party be sure to have non-alcoholic drinks available and plenty of food. The responsibility of a safe party lies with the host. Always drive defensively- being alert for other drivers especially on new year's.

Would be nice if a cab company would offer free rides. Would surely cut down on deaths and accidents don't ya think?
