Virginia Smoke Invades Eastern Carolina
Smoke has again invaded Eastern Carolina, but this time it's from a fire that's burning out of control in Virginia.
Smoke from the wildfire in the Great Dismal Swamp, just over the Virginia state line, is blowing south. The smoke was heavy in Belhaven and into Hyde County on Wednesday, some 80 miles from the fire.
Air quality experts say the smoke could include Roanoke Rapids, Plymouth, Edenton, Elizabeth City and the northern Outer Banks. Because of that, Code Red conditions have been predicted for Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties. Code Orange is possible in those areas as well as Bertie and Northampton counties. Intermittent smoky conditions could occur in much of northeastern North Carolina.
The Virginia fire has burned some 3,200 acres and was discovered August 4th.
