Storm Damage in Pitt County, None From Washington County Tornado

Storms rolled through several counties across the east Wednesday including in Washington County where a weak tornado touched down near the town of Wenona.

Thankfully there was no damage there. That is not the case in Pitt County where three buildings were damaged and power lines were knocked down from what's believed to have been straight line winds.

The storm that passed through Stokes may not have lasted that long, but for one homeowner, it was long enough to cause major damage.

"I was just surprised, shocked." said Pitt County homeowner Tommy Briley.

Briley says he was outside working when the strong winds blew off the roof to his barn near Stokes, and then struck a nearby power line causing it to fall into the middle of Highway 30.

"There was a school bus here that saw it happen and the woman on the school bus was just shook up," said Stokes firefighter Paul Morning.

The bus driver waited to cross over the power line until the fire department arrived. Traffic was stopped on Highway 30 for about 15 minutes while crews worked to restore the power line.

"You never know what you're going to expect coming up on a call like this or any other call for that matter. You just hope nobody's hurt and give a helping hand where ever you can," said Morning.

Fortunately no one was hurt, but Briley says the storms destroyed two of his buildings and caused damage to his house. Pitt County Emergency Management Director Noel Lee says it is a common sight this time of year.

"We start to see when the hot air, warm air, starts to come in and compete with the cool air that we do start to see some of these problems," said Lee.

While preparing for severe weather can be difficult, Lee advises residents seek shelter when they see the weather getting worse and drivers should slow their speed or pull over until the storm passes.

Greenville Utilities says no one in the area lost power from Wednesday's storms.
