New details about university police shooting a former student who brought a gun on a campus at Elizabeth City State University this weekend.
Witnesses told police the gunman was involved in a fight, left campus, and returned with the gun to retaliate.
Rashaad Gardner, 24-years-old, is charged with assault by pointing a gun after campus police say he brought an AK-47 to campus.
The school says about 1:15 am Saturday officers arrived after a fight at Complex D dorm. Officers say Gardner arrived with the AK-47 and they asked him to drop it, but he refused, pointed the gun at police, and at least one officer shot Gardner in the leg.
Gardner ran into the woods, but was found, treated for his injury, and is in the Albemarle District Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Elizabeth City State University police have now identified a former student who brought an AK-47 to campus early Saturday morning.
Rashaad Gardner has been arrested and charged with assault by pointing a gun, possession of a weapon on state educational property, and going armed to the terror of the people. Gardner is being held in the Albemarle District Jail on $50,000 bond.
ECSU Police say the school was put on lock down Saturday for around two hours after officers on foot patrol ran into students running from what they reported was a man with a gun.
Police located the suspect and say they asked Gardner to drop the AK-47 repeatedly but he refused. According to police at least one officer shot Gardner in the leg after he pointed the gun at police.
Gardner then ran into a wooded area after being hit by at least one bullet. Elizabeth City police brought K-9 units to campus to assist in the search and locate Gardner.
Police say Gardner graduated from the school in the fall of 2010.
