Fire officials say the 70 square mile Pains Bay Fire in Dare County located one mile west of Stumpy Point is now 100% contained. Fire officials say 100 % containment does not mean the fire is out. However, the current containment lines have held for more than 3 weeks.
The fire is receiving a good rain, but the exact amount received won't be known for sure until tomorrow.
Hot areas near the containment lines have been flooded or burned themselves out. This has strengthened the fire lines to a point where fire officials consider the fire “contained”. Firefighters will remain in place to continue pumping operations, monitor the remaining hot spots and ensure the safety of area communities.
Burn out operations were conducted on the Juniper Road Fire, located in Pender County. The acreage, previously at 21,336 acres will be increased tomorrow. Containment is now at 25%.
Smoke from this fire is also affecting a large portion of eastern North Carolina.
A burning ban remains in effect for 27 eastern North Carolina counties, including areas south of U.S. 64 and east of Interstate 95.
