Suspected Copper Thieves Nabbed Breaking Into Police Athletic League Building

Police say thanks to a new security system, they caught two men red-handed---stealing copper out of an old school that was leased by the Police Athletic League and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Lemeyon Walker of South Mills and Tevin Walker of Elizabeth City were caught coming out of a second story window at the former Elizabeth City Middle School Sunday night, according to Elizabeth City police.

Earlier in the day officers discovered the building had been broken into and copper piping had been cut from the air conditioning system. Anticipating a return visit, PAL volunteers installed a security system for the entire building and then monitored the system.

Around 9:20 p.m. officers say their hunch came true as the new system did its job.

The two Walkers were charged with felony breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen goods, injury to real property and first degree trespass.
