High School Teacher/Coach Due In Court In 1996 Rape Case

A former teacher and girls softball coach at New Bern High School is scheduled for an appearance in court in Perquimans County Wednesday, accused of the statutory rape of a student in 1996.

Harrell Thach of Emerald Isle was arrested October 8, and he then resigned from his teaching and coaching posts at New Bern High School.

Authorities say he's been charged with statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl when he worked at Perquimans High School back in 1996. Sheriff Eric Tilley says the alleged rape did not happen at the high school.

A teacher and girls softball coach at New Bern High School went before a judge today in Perquimans County, accused of raping a student in the 1990s.

Harrell Thach of Emerald Isle was arrested Monday night and jailed in Carteret County. He was transferred to Perquimans County, where he went before a district judge this morning.

Authorities say he's been charged with statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl when he worked at Perquimans High School back in 1996. Sheriff Eric Tilley says the alleged rape did not happen at the high school.

The school system says Thach has resigned from New Bern High School.

The judge gave the man a court-appointed attorney and set his next court date for October 24th.

A teacher and girls softball coach at New Bern High School is accused of raping a student when he was a teacher in another Eastern Carolina county several years ago.

Harrell Thach was arrested last night by deputies in Carteret County at his Emerald Isle home.

Authorities say he's been charged with statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl when he worked at Perquimans High School back in the 1990s. Sheriff Eric Tilley says the alleged rape did not happen at the high school. He says his deputies are en route to Carteret County to pick up Thach.

The New Bern High School's web site says the 57-year-old was a social studies teacher and softball coach. Calls to the Craven County School system Wednesday had not yet been returned.
