Multi-State Bank Robber Given 26 Life Sentences

A man who robbed an Eastern Carolina bank, and 12 other places in six states was given a total of 26 life prison sentences.

Thirty-nine-year-old Chad Schaffner of Indianapolis was sentenced Tuesday in federal court for holdups in 2009, including 11 banks, one credit union and one retail store. Fourteen of the sentences are to run consecutively.

Schaffner robbed the Southern Bank on Queen Street in Edenton in August 2009 and three other banks in the state. Other robberies happened in Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and Illinois.

Schaffner's picture was posted on electronic billboards across the South after traditional investigations failed. Agents said the tactic worked because he was identified as a suspect within 24 hours of bank surveillance photos popping up on wall-size electronic highway signs.
