Man Stabbed To Death At "Social Gathering"

One Halifax County man is dead and another in jail on a murder charge after a party turned deadly.

Deputies say John Butler of Roanoke Rapids is being held without bond after his arrest Wednesday morning.

Dead is 31-year-old Jay Hecht, also from Roanoke Rapids. Deputies say Hecht was stabbed multiple times and died at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Deputies say the murder happened at a home on Old Halifax Road around 2:45 a.m. during a social gathering. They say the victim and the suspect were acquainted, but are not releasing further details on the homicide.

I think drunken party is more accurate than social gathering. I wonder what the outcome would have been minus the alcohol and drugs? It's all quite tragic, and was completely avoidable. Sounds to me as if there is responsibility for both men,yet I know that at this time it is difficult for loved ones to accept this. For me it will serve as a reminder as to why I left this type of life behind me... there are only negative consequences and heartache to be found in it.

Notice how WITN has "Social Gathering" in quotes? Even they see something suspicious about this get together at 2:45 am.

Very well put Friend in FL. I also have been reading the posts and have been telling my family to avoid them because it has been breaking my heart to read the horrible things people have been saying. I don't know the whole story and I feel bad for John Butler's family that they are suffering and have to constantly receive harassment because of John Butler's actions. All I have to say to them is you will still get to visit your brother/father. As for me, I will not receive the pleasure to visit with, talk to, or even see Jeremy again.

I have read the posts back & forth & the focus has been taken off the fact that a good person was senselessly murdered & now leaves behind children who will go thru life w/out their dad. Jeremy didn't deserve this, no matter what! I miss my friend. People's hearts are hurting & now's not the time to defend a murderer via chat. For John Butler's family, every time you state that Jeremy's death was over self-defense, you are stabbing the loved ones in the heart that Jeremy left behind. It is what it is...John Butler took the life of someone I loved as a friend & his actions cannot be undone.

How long before the mug shot was he beaten to a pulp? I don't pretend to know what happened, honestly don't care, that is not my job, it is now the court systems. As far as the Roanoke Rapids PD being corrupt, how would you like it if they were not there, you wouldn't. Just let the justice system handle it. As far as putting out all the info on this case on the internet by family members is not a very good idea. I know you care for your father and brother but you will do him more harm than good if you continue, everyone is entitled their own opinion, but sometimes they are best kept to yourself, more so if they create more damage. I know it is hard to deal with all the opinions, but for the sake of your family and his attorney just let it go and focus on them and not on the people posting.
