Man Wanted After Escaping Custody, Biting & Tasing Police Officer

Police are still looking for a man who they say escaped custody and then managed to bite a police officer, even using the officer's stun gun on him.

Dinari Lindsey is wanted by Elizabeth City police on multiple warrants, including common law robbery, escape from custody, assault on a government official, larceny of a motor vehicle, and resisting a public officer.

Police say the 26-year-old escaped Sunday from the Magistrate's Office while Officer Timothy Bateman was readjusting the man's handcuffs. Information on the escape was released Wednesday morning by police.

They say the officer managed to catch up to the fleeing Lindsey, who then began swinging at Bateman. The officer deployed his stun gun, which did not fully incapacitate the suspect. They say Lindsey then gained control of the device and stunned Officer Bateman in the forehead.

After exchanging several blows, police say Lindsey ran to a nearby car that was left running and took off through several yards. The vehicle was found a short time later with the stolen police taser inside.

Officer Bateman was treated for multiple bite wounds at Albemarle Hospital and was released.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Lindsey, they should call Elizabeth City Police Department at 252-335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Pasquotank County Crime Line at 252-335-5555. Information which leads to the arrest of Lindsey could qualify for a cash reward of up to $2000.
