A Columbia man, who had been charged with first degree murder, was found guilty of a lesser charge on Thursday.
Sheriff Darryl Liverman says a jury found Vinh Nguyen guilty of voluntary manslaughter in Tyrrell County after his trial.
The 27-year-old Nguyen was standing trial for the August 7th, 2011 murder of Thuwen Cao, also of Columbia. Cao was stabbed on Riverneck Road and later died at Chowan Hospital.
Nguyen was sentenced to serve at least five years, four months in state prison for the death.
